A new report from the National Institutes of Health found that adults (middle-aged and up) can reduce their risk of Type 2 diabetes by as much as 80% by adhering to a combination of five healthy-lifestyle habits. The factors (a healthy diet, exercising, maintaining normal body weight, not smoking and consuming alcohol in moderation), either alone or in combination, can have a dramatic impact on staving off Type 2 diabetes and other diseases.

The research project was massive. More than 200,000 people were followed between the ages of 50 and 71 when the study began in 1995. At the beginning of the research project, none of the participants had any sign of heart disease, cancer or diabetes. They were then followed for 11 years, during which time about 10% of women developed diabetes. The data, published in the September 6 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine found that even developing just one of these healthy lifestyle factors could reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, which 26 million people were diagnosed with last year. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, it’s now the seventh leading cause of death. This study showed that obesity is still the biggest risk factor.

Men of normal weight which were followed were 78% less likely to develop diabetes. However, researchers noted that even the overweight can drastically reduce their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by following the other four healthy lifestyle attributes. At Family inHome Caregiving, we stress to all of our Clients that a healthy diet, exercise and getting social stimulation are key to having a long and happy life. This study shows that it can also impact your risk of developing diabetes, a very debilitatingdisease.
